Chrismukkah

CHRISMUKKAH

At 6:00 PM on Christmas Day
Hanukkah started.
“You don’t say.”
Yes, 2005 was a special year.
It summed to seven,
A number so dear
Our Christmas tree
Cost seventy dollars.
“Another seven,” someone hollers.
Our Christmas ham cost $ 19.31,
That’s the year I was born. Now isn’t this fun?
But then I wonder. Is it a sham?
I, Ute Herbig-Kaboolian, wow!
Man, oh, man,
What a ham I am!

The Mind

THE MIND

Primordial mists
Surround my brow,
Yet mind and brow
Are manifest expressions of the mind.
And mind cannot be cut into a thousand pieces
As light cannot.

Still mind can choose
To close its eyes against its light,
Can dream, instead.

And in that dream
Can scramble, crawl and slither,
Alone and running yon and hither
Within its own dark,
Empty spaces imagined to be real,
Quite cut-off from its source –

Until one day or night,
All in its own good season,
It comes to know itself
As that white crystal-clear,
And sunny dispositioned
Inner light:
That light of love and reason

Lady Day (for Wayne Thiel, artist)

Lady Day

LadyDayWayneThiel
Lady Day, courtesy of the artist, Wayne Thiel

Lady Day is song and dance,
Movement and energy.
At first glance there’s swirling
And twirling, there’s movement,
There’s sound,
Ebullience and vibrancy:
Joy all around.
There’s fine execution of curve and of line,
Good contrast, clear outlines,
And rhythm and rhyme.
In short, my dear Wayne,
Lady Day is sublime.

Two Hearts

TWO HEARTS

Two hearts found each other;
The world’s in a swoon.
Stars twinkle and glimmer
And dance ’round the moon.

At morning’s first light
The birds sing their song:
Two hearts are together.

Their love is strong.
From behind the dense clouds
Bursts the bright sun.
The world is brand-new
For two hearts beat as one.

Rapping

RAPPING

A blank piece of paper,
A pencil or pen:
A thought in my mind
Jumped out at me when
I least had expected
A sentence to form.
I can tell that it isn’t
My habit, or norm.
It’s like waiting to see
What my inner self brings
To my outer, my conscious.
I’m passive. It flings
Thoughts at me hoping
That I put them down
Trusting, that I find
The right phrase, or noun.
It’s a little like rapping
I’m sure you can see
In the way I feel happy,
Creative and free.

Mother Earth

MOTHER EARTH

5-13-2007=18

In a year that sums to nine,
A number cherished and divine,
Mother’s Day,
It can be seen,
Falls on Sunday, May thirteen,
Which, of course,
Is another nine
And makes this day
Especially fine.
The total,
Number eighteen, or chai,
Means life on our planet,
And now I know why:
It’s our reason for living on good mother earth.
So let us be grateful,
Protect her and love her.
Let’s celebrate her
For all she is worth.

Father Time

FATHER TIME

6-17-2007=23=5

In a year that sums to 9,
A number cherished and divine,
Father’s Day – it can be seen –
Falls on June, the seventeenth.
6-17 sums to 14,
Which sums to five, a number pristine.
Now, add the year’s 9 and get 23.
It still sums to five.
How can this be?
It’s because of the 9 which, in German as “nein”
Means: don’t add a thing. That number’s divine!
Oh, just one more thing between me and you,
Time’s an enigma: elusive, and true.

Der Glaube

DER GLAUBE

Der Glaube faellt wie’s Laub vom Baum.
Ein neuer spriesst hervor im Traum.
Denn glauben muss man, um zu leben.
Drum graemt Euch nicht.
So ist es eben.

Beliefs (II)

B E L I E F S (II)

They fall like leaves from trees.
In due course, others follow these.
As a tree needs leaves
To live and to be,
So beliefs are the leaves of humanity.
One leaf, or belief,
We might as well chance it,
And see what’s in store.
A belief in the good
Can turn things around.
In the blink of an eye
The answer is found.
We have made the trnasition. We have altered the end.
It’s a brand-new beginning!
To continue the trend of ushering in this new coming age
In our minds let us see
An earth loving, creature loving, utterly benign,
Strong, safe, supportive, almost divine world,
A world we have yearned for but did not know.
That in order to grow,
Though we have our beliefs,
We, ourselves, are the tree.

In the blink of an eye the answer is found.
We’ve made the transition.
We have altered the end.
It becomes a beginning, and
We finally, finally, understand.
